We love birds, we want to support them in our gardens and urban spaces with natural food and habitat.
We are based in the fantastic Scottish city of Glasgow. Scotland is a wonderful, wild place but the cities here are like urban spaces anywhere, they lack nature. We want to demonstrate that if you make spaces for birds and feed them great food, they can thrive alongside us even in the most densely populated places. Hearing birdsong and connecting with nature lowers stress and makes us happier so supporting birds is a win for them and a win for us.
Garden Crowd was started out of frustration from only being able to find poor quality, plastic packed bird food. After lots of our own experiments in a rural village garden in Derbyshire, we developed seed mixes that our birds really loved and we saw their feathers get brighter, their chicks thrive to become healthy adults and we awoke to their beautiful songs everyday. After sharing our mixes with friends and neighbours we realised that people had an appetite for a good quality, plastic-free bird food.
Rural vs. Urban
We swapped our rural life in Derbyshire, for the city of Glasgow and brought our seed mixes with us. Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we continued to hand-blend our eco-friendly, high-quality bird food. We truly care about birds. We support their wellbeing in a holistic way. Feeding them food that is seasonal and better for them means they get the nutrients they need at the right times of year. Think about it, humans do not eat the same foods in winter and summer. In the cold weather we need more fat, more protein and so do garden birds. Our mixes (link to real bird food) are wheat & filler free, making them a little more expensive but much better value.
Business for Good
At the start of 2019, we realised that we wanted to do more than sell the best quality bird food in the UK. We wanted to support more birds, in particular urban birds. Since moving to Glasgow and living in a city, we have seen the difficulties that birds face. In rural gardens you are not as aware of habitat loss, the lack of natural food and the broken-up landscapes that birds have the navigate. Birds still need our support in rural places, where the landscapes are not always as rich in natural food as they might appear, but city birds are in dire need.
So, we now do business for good; meaning we support urban birds through the profits of our bird food. You can find out more about our projects here
